Monday must-haves | my mummy face

Monday, 24 March 2014

I'm no beauty expert, but I'd definitely describe myself as an enthusiast. I read a lot of beauty blogs and have a weakness for skincare products. Admittedly a bit less so now I'm on maternity leave…

With three beanies to get out the door in the morning, nine times out of ten I have a grand total of five minutes to put my makeup on. I have a tried-and-tested handful of products that make sure I don't frighten small children on the school run. No make-up brushes involved - I can literally apply with my fingers and go.

I'll admit the first product is a bit of an investment - to say the least. Chantecaille Just Skin is eye-wateringly expensive at £57 but it had been on my wish list for a long time and, armed with a Space NK gift voucher, I bit the bullet. I'm so glad I did. If like me you prefer a lighter base (particularly in the spring and summer months) this is perfect. It offers light coverage, evens out your skin tone and leaves a natural glow to your skin. It also contains SPF15. Thankfully a little seems to go a very long way. I've had the tube for almost a year now and I still have at least half left. This is very good news cos, as much as I love it, I'm not sure I could bring myself to pay that much for it again.

A great, and slightly cheaper, alternative is Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser. I have the oil-free version. It gives a little more coverage and is still easy to apply with your fingers or a foundation brush if you prefer.

Concealer. An absolute essential. Soap and Glory Kick Ass concealer is a really affordable product which contains two shades and a setting powder for £10. The peachy shade is perfect for under the eyes to cancel out blue/purple tones - goodbye dark circles! The more yellow shade is good for covering redness and blemishes. Great product and excellent value (unlike my earlier picks!).

I pop a bit of YSL Touche Eclat on top of the concealer because, lets face it, I need it. Ayden is teething and waking at least twice a night at the moment. I need all the help I can get!

Urban Decay Primer Potion in the shade Eden is a quick and easy way to even out the colour of your eye lids and make your eyes look brighter and more awake. You're supposed to use this as base for eyeshadow, which I do if I'm going somewhere special, but otherwise I just slap this on, blend it in with my fingers and that's that.

Stila Convertible Colour in the shade Lilium is a two-in-one lip and cheek colour, but I just use it as a cream blush. Its quick and easy to apply, stays put for ages and gives a really natural, healthy glow.

Benefit Gimme Brow is my newest discovery and its bloody brilliant! Perfect for girls that prefer a slightly fuller, darker brow. I used to use powder with an angled brush and, lets be honest, that's a bit of a faff when time is not on your side. This is a brush-on fiber gel which fills in gaps, tames the hairs and builds easily to give you perfectly arched brows. Love, love, love it!

Last but not least, after curling my lashes, a quick coat of waterproof mascara. At the moment I'm using Max Factor False Lash Effect, but I also like the L'Oreal Telescopic mascara. To be honest I usually go for whatever's on offer in Boots. I'm a bit of a mascara floozy :)

So that's it. It looks like a lot written down but it usually takes me just a little over five minutes to apply and I'm good to go.

Our little beach in spring

Wednesday, 19 March 2014

We live by the sea and it makes me happy. It takes just ten minutes to walk from our house to the beach, so we spend a lot of time there.

One of the nice things about living so close is that, no matter what the weather, we can walk to the beach, enjoy the fresh sea air and explore with the littlies.

But now the weather is getting warmer (hooray!) I'm looking forward to lots of spring walks and picnics on the sand, splashing in the sea and ice cream cones.

What's your favourite thing about where you live?

Bambeanie's birthday wishlist

Monday, 17 March 2014

In a month's time my teeny weeny bambeanie will turn one. Crazy, I know.

My husband finds it hilarious that I'm already planning his gifts and birthday party. But quite frankly I think its weird that he isn't ;)

Ayden is a little smiley ray of sunshine - always happy, giggling and a joy to have as part of our little family. So I've decided to throw him a little tea party full of sunshine. Naturally, I've pinterested the the heck out of this although, as it'll just be us and close family, I'm going to try and restrain myself and not go overboard.

But, if I were to be going overboard… how amazing is this!?

There are a few bits and pieces I've already decided to get him as gifts. The first is Lucky Boy Sunday's Fancy Nulle. I've seen his cute little face photo-bombing his way across my instagram feed for months now and I'd just love to have him come live with us too.

Ayden loves putting small (ish) toys into bigger ones. Empty. And repeat. These nesting animal dolls are cute, bright and he'll love them. I may put the tiniest one out of his reach until he's older though. Just in case.

How amazing is this rainbow toy? Looks gorgeous and you can stack the arches to form a rainbow or the other way into a tower. My older beanies loved stacking toys so I know this will be a hit.

This rocket has been on my wish list for Ayden for a while. Its a magnetic puzzle with large pieces  which are easy for little hands to take apart and reassemble. Its very reasonably priced too at just £16.50.

I take Ayden to Monkey Music every week and he adores it. Last week he even busted his baby moves for the first time. So adorable. He loves playing with all the instruments so would have a great time with this Big Sound set by Haba.

Wow, I've got some serious shopping to do. But it's ok if its for Ayden and not for me. Right?

Slipping through my fingers

Tuesday, 4 March 2014

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
And I have to sit down for a while
The feeling that I'm losing her forever
And without really entering her world
I'm glad whenever I can share her laughter
That funny little girl

Oh good grief. Just reading these lyrics breaks my heart a little bit.

I remember watching Mama Mia for the first time, hearing this Abba song and thinking how sad I would be when my baby girl (who was just one year old at the time) started school and became less dependent on me. The day she would start slipping through my fingers.

Where have those five years gone?

Now my baby girl is six. And life goes so fast, it terrifies me. The days are a blur of routine and just getting things done.

I'm so guilty of it. Not stopping to appreciate the small things. The "not now, I'm busy" syndrome. I hear myself saying it all too often and it takes a little piece of me away every time.

My little lady is creative, bright, so funny, caring, beautiful with the most pretty eyes, clever, stubborn as a mule, loyal, sensitive. Just wonderful, from head to toe. I feel so blessed to be able to spend every day with her; but I need time to slow down.

I'm not ready for her to stop being my baby girl.

My best friend. My beautiful girl. My mini me. I love you.

Monday must-haves

Monday, 3 March 2014

I've developed a small Instagram obsession of late. Which is good for exercising my creative muscles, but not so good for the bank balance.

I could spend hours - who am I kidding, days! - browsing pics of stylish interiors, cool kids clothes and food. Mmm the food….

As a result, I've compiled quite an impressive virtual wishlist. Here are some of the items I'm coveting this week ;)

My beautiful little lady is my ray of sunshine. Bright, bubbly and full of light. This Bobo Choses dress just jumped off the screen at me the first time I saw it (along with the rest of the SS14 collection!) and it will suit her to a T. I may have already ordered this one… along with the flashdance playsuit and rainbow tank. Oops.

I'm not sure if its a good or bad thing that I've discovered This Modern Life. The most amazing online store, focusing on stylish, unique products for your home. We're in the process of re-doing the bedrooms for our three little people so I've been on the lookout for cool bits and pieces with sass and personality, just like them. There's no need to look anywhere else. This Modern Life has it all!

I've already placed an order for Dylan's room. At seven years old, he's one cool little man and wanted his room to be black. Clearly he's been peeking at my Instagram feed and is taking his inspiration from the beautiful monochrome interiors this season. Well, that's how I'm interpreting his request anyway ;) Look out for a post with pics soon.

So now I've moved on to coveting items for the littlest bean when he moves into his new room (or when I've managed to convince my husband to let me place another order!). For Ayden's room I'm thinking bright and bold. A paintbox of primary colours against white walls and painted wood floors. Top of my wishlist at the moment is this amazing Lapin and Me Baby Lapin lamp. Swoon.

Ayden is cutting his top two teeth at the moment so my last must-have this Monday is coffee. Strong coffee. Nespresso is my hero.
