My baby is one

Wednesday, 7 May 2014

This is my third or fourth attempt to write this post. For some reason I've been putting it off. Its almost as though writing it down makes it too real. Well, that and a serious lack of hours in the day lately. Anyone else think time is being sped up behind our backs…?

Waaah! My baby is one. One year old! How the bloody hell did that happen!?

I blinked and twelve months just went. Gone. This has been, without a shadow of a doubt, the fastest year ever.

But a completely wonderful year too. I feel completely blessed and so lucky to have my little family of wonderful people. And Ayden has been the cherry on top of our totally awesome cake.

This little man came into our lives and brought with him sunshine, giggles, a whirlwind of loveliness. I've seen another side to both of my older children - they adore him more than I could ever have imagined. I kept thinking the novelty would wear off a little and they'd become a bit bored of 'the baby thing'. But no. They completely idolise him. And he knows it :) They are the best big brother and sister I could have wished for.

We have a family tradition that on the morning of your birthday you come down to a display of gifts and balloons on the kitchen table. Here's Ayden's first ever birthday morning display.

We had a little tea party to celebrate Ayden's birthday. Nothing too crazy - just us and close family. It was perfect.

I went for a (very subtle) circus theme, which made for some great photos. Lots of colour, hot dogs, pom poms and cake.

I found this amazing cardboard hotdog stand from a local party shop. I think it really made the table come alive and I was so pleased with how it looked.

I got the idea for these pretty little marshmallow treats from a lovely lady I follow on Instagram (@Kawaiigirl79 - go check her out, her photos are beautiful!) and they tasted even better than they looked.

Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of it, but I made a banner using a photo from each month of Ayden's life so far. This added a nice personal touch and was a cute alternative to bunting. I also decorated with a pom pom garland in circus-inspired colours from Peggy's Pom Poms. I absolutely love this and it now has pride of place in Ayden's room.

I loved the idea of a cake smash, having seen hundreds of ideas and photos on good old Pinterest. I decided to set up my own make-shift backdrop and attempt to get some photos at the end of the birthday party. It went surprisingly smoothly, Ayden (not surprisingly) loved the cake and I was really pleased with the photos. Plus everyone had a great time watching him demolish the cake!

We had a lovely day, surrounded by family, celebrating our beautiful one year old boy. I just hope the next year goes a little bit slower.
