Our Netflix favourites

The boys are out rock climbing. Ayden is asleep (on time!). This calls for a girl's night. Me and my little lady, our favourite blanket, Krispy Kremes and the remote to ourselves. Perfection.

With a whole world of Netflix at our disposal, it's no easy task choosing a girl's night playlist. We toyed with Adventure Time, mused over My Little Pony and considered iCarly.

The brief? Girlie (Meryn and I are forced to watch a LOT of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Stampy), funny, magical and tolerable for a grown up (that was my stipulation).

Some of these might be new to you, some might be on regular rotation in your house, but here are our top picks for a girls night in.

The girlie one: Ever After High
Our choices were all pretty girlie, but Ever After High takes the glitter and fluff to a whole new level. And we love it! Set in a boarding school for the children of famous fairytale characters - Apple White, Raven Queen and (my favourite) Madeline Hatter. I think this one might be exclusive to Netflix; it started as a series of Youtube webisodes, so its great to be able to watch full episodes. Meryn doesn't have any of the Ever After High dolls, but I think they might feature quite highly on her birthday wishlist after this!

The funny one: Richie Rich
I loved the Macaulay Culkin movie Richie Rich as a kid. Millions of $$$ to spend on whatever you choose? What's not to love? When I saw that Netflix had commissioned a series by the same name, I had to give it a go. This one probably wouldn't have been top of Meryn's list, but she seemed to really enjoy it. It's a great choice for families to watch together.

The magical one: Care Bears
Another classic from my childhood and thankfully a firm favourite for Meryn too (and Dylan, not that he would ever admit it). Care Bears is just a joy to watch and it's just getting better with age. I'm devastated that I didn't keep my collection of Care Bears though... they would have been well loved by my three.

The tolerable one: Total Drama Island
To be honest, I love kids TV so all of these are pretty tolerable for me. But Total Drama Island is a great choice if you want something that is genuinely hilarious for little people and grown ups alike. My husband has been known to laugh hysterically at many an episode. It's basically an animated spoof of TV survival shows, set in Camp Wawanakwa it follows a group of teenagers as they battle it out to survive the island retreat and score the $100,000 prize. Witty, great characters and very entertaining.

What are your top picks for a night in with the whole family? Krispy Kremes are a given, natch ;)

Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel

Like most busy mums, I can't remember the last time I felt pampered. We're talking probably five or six years since I visited a salon for any type of beauty treatment. But, lack of facials aside, I like to do what I can to look after my skin at home.

Ok, so I spend a little more on skincare than I would probably admit to my husband but, considering I don't spend anything on treatments or even having my hair done more than twice a year (!), I figure its alright to invest a little in the products I use every day. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

A product I'm really enjoying at the moment is the Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel. I first discovered it about six months ago and have used it religiously ever since; but it seems to come into its own in the colder months, when amped up central heating and bitterly cold weather take their toll on my skin.

Despite what the name suggests, I would say this is more of a balm than a gel. When you apply it to the skin it turns into an oil, removes makeup easily and the smell.... oh, the smell. Who needs to go to a spa when you can treat yourself with a product like this every day.

You only need a small amount, so a bottle will last you a good few months. The balm/oil texture means my skin never feels stripped or dry, but is left feeling clean and hydrated. I've just started my second bottle and can't see why I'll ever want to use anything else.

I've tried so many cleansers over the years and can honestly say that this is my favourite. Hands down.

You can pick it up from Cult Beauty for £28. I'd highly recommend it. And its way cheaper than a facial :)

1. It must be getting warmer - my spring/summer breakfast of champs is back in rotation and it's a belter. Just halve some ripe peaches, sprinkle with cinnamon, dot with butter and pop them in the oven to roast for about 20 mins. Combined with honey greek yogurt and granola, you'll wonder how you ever survived without it!
2. I may or may not have purchased a few Bobo Choses SS15 pieces. Although this cannot be confirmed as yet, I have been spotted frantically listing things on eBay. You may call it damage control. I say coincidence.
3. Meet Destructo. Throwing, bashing, hurling, smashing. All in a day's play for this little hurricane.
4. A romantic valentine's dinner for five. Bills. Guacamole. Rhubarb and stem ginger creme brûlée. Perfect.

5. Love cuddling up with this little princess and My Little Pony on Netflix.
6. Post-run pancakes. I knocked another minute off my 6k time this weekend, so I earned these. Maybe not the Cadbury's creme egg that came after it, but let's not dwell on that.
7. Meryn is always writing little notes and cards for us. I love them all and want to keep them forever. I literally have bags and folders full of her love notes and drawings. Maybe I'll get around to properly filing them one day... here's hoping.
8. This little nugget was picked as a brand enthusiast for Buffalo & Bear last weekend - makers of super stylish moccasins and apparel for the coolest of kids. As you can tell, Ayden is pretty excited to try out the products :)

1. Lashes ♡♡♡
2. Naptime calls for laptop, tea and dark chocolate digestives. Standard.
3. Anyone else have a Monchichi as a child? Meryn had one for her birthday and she loves it so much. I remember loving mine too. I'm having a bit of a retro toys moment right now. Perhaps I'll do a blog post on our favourites.
4. I bought this Bobo Choses romper for Ayden to wear on his first birthday and it was huuuuge! Its only just fitting him now and is still a bit big on him. Love it though.

5. These are two of our favourite and most read books at the moment. They're kitsch, cute, kawaii and we love them.
6. Blue skies like this make running much more fun. Roll on spring.
7. These three had the best time on the beach last weekend. It was so good to see some sunshine and they just ran around collecting sticks and stones, making soup out of sea water and seaweed and letting their imaginations run wild.
8. Naps are becoming a bit of a problem at the moment. Either he doesn't want to fall asleep in the first place, or he wakes up way too soon and is tres grumpy. Very much hoping this is just a phase and not the end of naps altogether... *sobs quietly into cold tea*

Enjoy the little things

Sometimes the simplest things make me the happiest.

This weekend was great. Nothing particularly exciting happened, but it was just lovely. The sun was shining, we ate good food and got lots of fresh air.

Chef the movie

I was in the mood to watch a movie with a great story last night. I'd heard a lot about Chef and thought it was worth a go. Wow. What a film. I absolutely loved it. Great story and soundtrack, excellent cast and a food lover's dream. The Cubano sandwich looks seriously good. This was a perfect Sunday night movie. Loved it.

Peanut Butter & Co White Chocolate

Aside from obsessing over Cubano sandwiches (seriously, I have to have one), in other food news this little jar of wonderfulness (is that a word?) has made me very happy this weekend.  White chocolate peanut butter. It's an absolute revelation. Sweet, but not sickly (in normal human-being quantities - I may have overdone it a little on first tasting!). Peanut Butter & Co also makes a maple pecan flavour peanut butter. Perfection? I think so.

Beach days

I harp on about spending time at the beach a lot, I know. But it feels so good to be able to get back down there without risk of hypothermia. We spent a couple of hours cycling to the beach and playing on the sand in the sunshine yesterday (after I'd completed another 6k run, in my best time yet - go me!). I could really feel spring in the air and the kids had a great time in their own little imaginary world.

What we're reading

Bookshelf

We've had these two books for a little while and, I can confirm, it's love.

Along with our BabyLit books, Ayden wants to read these pretty much every day. And for good reason. They're adorable.

With colourful, kawaii illustrations and lovely words, these little board books are just beautiful.

You are my cupcake, Joyce Wan

Let's face it, anything with a cupcake on the front is going to be a winner. Ayden adores this book and his big sister loves reading it to him too.

Sticky gumdrops and mushy little sweet peas... we have a special voice for each one. And there's a perfect opportunity at the end for tickles and baby giggles :)

Monochrome magic | my home wishlist

Lets stay home print

I did it. I mentioned the 'r' word. Redecorate. The lounge. My husband gave me a look. The look that says 'no chance; get some cushions and a lamp and be done with it.'

I don't dislike my lounge. It's just not how I would do it now, given the opportunity to start from scratch. It's a bit, well, eight years ago.

With a half-finished extension on the go, my chances of a freshly painted living room are pretty damn slim, so I've been seeking inspiration elsewhere.

Like the world and his dog, I've fallen head over heels for the monochrome look. I've always liked it for my wardrobe but not so much for the home. Until now.

I assure you this post isn't sponsored by H&M Home (I wish), it's just so stylish and affordable. These picks will give a fresh look to my lounge for practically nothing.

I've also convinced myself I need this pineapple lamp, from Laura Ashley.

Finish off with a wall of cool prints and typography, mixed with family photos and we'll be good to go. I love this one from Etsy (and the one at the top of the page).

That 'C'est la Vie!' cushion must be mine. I'm off to place a cheeky H&M order :)

1. Nap time cuddles with my mischievous little pug. He's such a busy little chap these days I treasure the moments when he just stops and gives me a hug.
2. I've turned into a bit of a stationery nerd. So sue me. I guess it goes hand in hand with the scrapbook thing, but it's developing into quite the addiction. My husband thinks I've lost it.
3. I've blogged about this perfect sandwich combo before. It has become my go-to, post-run pick me up. Packed full of good fats and protein and super-tasty to boot.
4. This little pickle has taken to waking up only 20 mins or so into his naps. Bad times. I think it's just a phase (I hope it's just a phase!). Good job he's cute.

5. Snaps from a lovely Sunday. Started with morning cuddles :)
6. Homemade almond croissants. I say homemade... I didn't actually make the dough (who has time for that!?), but I bought some ready to roll croissants and added thinly cut strips of marzipan (left over from Christmas). Top with flaked almonds and some icing sugar and they are waaay better than the shop bought version.
7. The perfect afternoon spent racing up and down sand dunes, climbing the coolest of trees and enjoying the winter sunshine.
8. Looking for Makka Pakka ♡
