Easy after-school snacking | trail mix recipe
Friday, 2 October 2015
Browsing through my numerous YouTube subscriptions last week, I came across a real gem. This video from What's Up Moms with three trail mix recipes. Turns out, it's the perfect after-school snack for my hungry little monkeys.
I'd heard of trail mix before, but was never sure what it actually was. I thought it probably involved dried fruit and nuts, but hadn't thought of adding things like dry cereal and chocolate chips into the mix.
My kids are always ravenous after school. So to keep them quiet until tea time, I've started giving them a small bowl of this (decanted from a large pre-mixed jar) and it definitely does the trick.
It only takes a few minutes to throw together and if you make it in a large quantity then store in an airtight jar, it'll last ages. Unless, like me, you discover a new favourite snack for yourself.... then you may need to make a double batch.
There are five basic ingredient groups - cereal, nuts, dried fruit, seeds and something sweet. The beauty of this is you can mix and match to suit your family's taste. Just stick to the basic groups and it'll turn out fine. Also, you want to add more of the cereal, followed by equal parts nuts and fruit (you could always leave out the nuts, if you prefer), a scattering of seeds and a small amount of sweet stuff. Here's what I used.
✚ Cheerios and Wheetos
✚ Blanched hazelnuts and pistachios
✚ Raisins, cranberries and banana chips
✚ Pumpkin and sunflower seeds
✚ Milk chocolate chips
I also found some peanut butter stuffed pretzels in one of my cupboards so added a handful of these. You know me and peanut butter. This was a good move!
Let me know if you've tried trail mix and what combination you've enjoyed the most.

I'm definetley going to try this. Even though my little one isn't in school yet she does get hungry in the afternoon so a snack like these would be ideal. She'd also live the fact it was kept in a jar like that x
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea to use Cheerios in the trail mix! I'd never thought of doing that before. Who knew cereal was so versatile? :P x
ReplyDeleteNow this looks like something i need to try for the boys - genius idea. Riley's always hungry when he gets home from preschool and helps himself to crisps which then spoils his appetite for dinner but this looks like a much healthier option! xxx
ReplyDeleteI always make up a little tub for my toddler to snack on if we are out. Dried dates are good too as are cubes of cheese
ReplyDeleteThis is such a good idea. I am always looking for easy snacks and I never thought of Trail mix
ReplyDeleteLots of my American friends bang on about trail mix and making their own special mixes of it. I think it could definitely catch on over here in the UK too.
ReplyDeleteive been meaning to try this, that is a brilliant idea, my lo has just started school and hes a nightmare when he comes home this is for sure a runner next week.
ReplyDeleteOoh I might try this, I'm constantly hungry as I'm breastfeeding so this will be perfect rather than heading for the bourbons!

ReplyDeleteDo you know, I feel a bit silly that I've never thought of doing this before! its such a simple idea and absolutely perfect for an afterschool snack. I also think that my children would really enjoy getting involved and knocking it all together in a big jar. Thanks for the top tip there!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great snack for after school. Kids are always ravenous aren't they, and need something like this to tied them over
ReplyDeleteIt sounds and looks delicious. Just the sort of snack that N would love, and I can see him making it himself too.
ReplyDeleteThat looks delicious! I would snack on that all day probably! It looks amazing as a work snack! Thank you for the combo suggestion! I will try for sure!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool idea I love the look of using snack jars to store treats for the children to have at school and in between meals at home. We do something similar with my friend.
ReplyDeleteI am so trying this, I love things in jars and these will look nice in my cupboards as well as being a healthy snack to lay my hands on quickly. Top tip thanks, I’m glad you watched that video (man I could spend hours on YouTube!) x
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea, I could happily sit and eat a box of dry cereal, add some choc chips and their would be none left for the kids ;) Xx
ReplyDeleteOoh brilliant idea. Such a shame I can't find more smaller snacky foods Hayden because of his allergies.
ReplyDeleteWill be on the look out now though, so I can do the same.

ReplyDeleteBeing an American, I am a huge fan of trail mix. My favourite quick version is M&Ms, salted peanuts and raisins. Love the sweet and salty together. May need to do a series of some American-inspired treats on my blog. Enjoy!
